suckers is for kids mostly. they know who their clientele is. though there are a fair number of things that are geared towards adults in the form of witty joke gifts like bottles of "pills" called "total bitch" as alternative remedies. of course there are adults who maintain their sweet tooth until it starts to rot and so theyre open to chomp on just as much as their kids.
the other major candy store in the city is tutti fruitti and though i think its great, and the stock in both stores is just too vast to compare so easily in terms of variety, i think that suckers is a step above for its sheer attention to detail and variety of presentation. when you walk in the store you notice different levels - stairs, shelves, open freezers youd see in the supermarket used to display only chocolate bars. visually its much more exciting than other stores of its kind, and for a kid especially it becomes (as it should) more of an adventure.
its true that they are expensive but its understandable. supply and demand makes it clear that because they have hundreds of things that most places wouldnt have, they are priced at a premium. there are no normal variety stores in the city that carry the variety that this place has - most dont even carry things that used to be more popular like pop rocks or mike and ikes. so in the same way that a gourmet dessert shop would charge for its organic ingredients or unusual recipe, i think this place (and tutti fruitti) will charge for its inventory and specialization.
there are a lot of great treats, toys, and joke gifts if thats the way you like to spend your cash and its all in one store.
