Yes, they are expensive, but they really do solid work. I bought a "HomePath" house (repo/bank-owned that needed significant work) and worked with Hawthorne from the beginning. They completely retrenched my master bath, installed all of my toilets, faucets, and literally everything else that had to be done (which was quite literally EVERYTHING). I did voice concern about one bill I found to be ridiculously high, but they did work with me to refund some of that. The bonus is that I have the 2 year guarantee on everything. Worked primarily with Ivan. He is the absolute best. Works fast, is thorough, and is very patient. I think many people are upset because they have home warranties that do not cover much of what Hawthorne goes out to do, which is understandable. But blame your home warranty, not the company that is called to come fix things that aren't covered. You are paying for LABOR, not parts. If you know how to do it, obviously you are going to save money by doing it yourself with parts from a box store.
