As far as inner city parks go, this is as modern as it gets. You can tell a lot of thought went into Romare Bearden, everything from the urban waterfalls to the spacious green short-grass areas that are perfect for picnics and lounging out.
A really neat gem to this park is about 15 feet away from the waterfalls, there is a square matrix of pedals in the ground. If you press the pedals the colors change in dynamic ways, it is really cool how this works.
The restroom facilities are about on par with what you would expect from a municipal-managed entity, even if groundskeepers are there 24/7 there's always someone who will make a mess at a minute's notice!
Take note that this is not your average 'play baseball and soccer' park, and there are a lot of different organizations that use the park on a frequent basis for community events and festivals, so it may be best to check Mecklenburg Parks and Rec site to make sure your planned quiet trip to the park isn't ruined by some weird holiday festival selling fitted bathtubs and hot sauce (yeah, it's happened before!).
If you're looking for food nearby, I highly suggest taking a stroll through the Latta Arcade on the other side of Church St. Not only are there options ranging from a deli, pizza, a pub, and even a Pho joint, but it's a safe passage back to Tryon street if you're going that way.
Have fun, and stay safe. Keep an eye on your kids, people!
