Review is for the cupcakes only.
I stopped in at dusk for a post workout treat. The interior is beautiful and upscale decor. It kind of reminds me of a set from David Tuterra's "My Fabulous Whatever Wedding". I took a gander at the available cupcakes. Pretty traditional flavors with a few that sounded amazing (Chocolate cupcake with Salted Caramel Frosting!). Because I'd heard a ton of "meh" in the reviews I decided to go with 2 staples. I figure you can tell a ton about quality by the way a cupcake shop does a standard Vanilla-vanilla or Chocolate-chocolate.
The Vanilla-vanilla was really good. The cupcake itself was beautifully rich, real vanilla bean in the cake (such a rarity) and held together really well considering its size. Speaking of size, it's almost like the cupcakes are overcompensating ;) They are easily twice the size of other cupcake shops. But, and I'm sorry to burst a bubble, size really doesn't matter in cupcakes. I'll take a delicious mini over a so-so giant any day.
I digress. The frosting was vanilla in flavor and VERY sweet. Almost cloying. Just the cupcake was delicious, with the frosting it was overly sweet and my teeth actually started to hurt.
I tried the Chocolate-chocolate the next day and, most unfortunately, was not impressed. I really wanted to like these cupcakes. They were so pretty and enormous. But, and I'm totally violating my own First Commandment in saying this (There's no such thing as too much chocolate), but the chocolate was OVERPOWERING. All I could taste was very dark, bitter chocolate. The frosting was the same. Unless you have a gallon of milk handy these are just too much.
Honestly, if you are going to charge this much for cupcakes they have to be spectacular. Kreative Kupcakes and Urban Cookies are so much better without the glitzy spectacle. Sorry Scottsdale, these just don't make the grade.
