Neurotica is a text book example of your classic used media shop: a place full of musical treasures, DVDs, a bit of disorganized, cramped chaos and a friendly owner who is doing what he loves. As mentioned below, Scott really is a friendly guy and loves talking about music, never in any kind of snobbish fashion either*. I've never tried to sell back to him. And not being a record buyer, I can only assume that the selection is all of that and a bag of chips (it seems that way). When looking for non jazz CDs, I've usually come across something good in that front bin of new arrivals. My memory is that I've often come upon goodies that I did not know existed. Prices are quite fair here. The last time I was in the store, earlier 2013, my jazz bug had fully taken over. I found a couple of interesting things but did note that it would be hard to find anything specific. I don't think any effort was put into organizing things beyond "A", "B", etc. But, I can appreciate this as jazz CD buyers are not really a target market in this area of the city. I used to work nearby and tried to pop in on lunch breaks but the hours at that point were a bit wonky. It is probably a good thing I don't work nearby anymore, at least writing from a financial point of view. This is one of those stores that should probably be checked regularly if you are a serious collector. It isn't often, and I don't make a point of it, but when in the area I always pop in. You just never know what you'll find. Highly recommended. *Bonus rant! Guys like him just make me laugh at the ridiculous notion of only downloading MP3s. Where is the heart and soul in this method of building out your music collection? Ok, yes, you can finally hear that bootlegged concert from 1992 but music consumption is best served with a huge dose of personal interaction and humanity and tactility. Smelling the history in that used shop, feeling the plastic cases, looking at all of the posters in the shop, conversing with the guy/girl behind the counter, perhaps saying something like, "Yeah, this has been on my list for years--so glad I found it!" And maybe they say, "Cool. You know, if you like that, check out X...." Not trying to be a hater--nearly everyone I know has jumped on the MP3 bandwagon years ago. Just saying that there is so much more to music than downloading and playing a computer file on your laptop or iPhone. Check it out some day.
