One of the better bases in the Air Force. Mind you, this is desert landscape so there's only so much you can do with shades of tan, but they keep the base looking neat and well maintained. The main gate entrance is sharp and the guards always have the appearance of highly motivated professionals, which they are.
The base has a nice large Exchange and Commissary. There's a full service gas station and prices seem to stay below what you'll find off-base.
For the civilian public: If you've never been to an air show you should try to attend at least once and Nellis has one of the best. This is a great way to meet your Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard neighbors. See some of the equipment and here the stories up close. If you're in the area when they have their Open House, it can make for a nice enjoyable day. I'll have to see if I can find their schedule and post it here.
Let's see, back to the base; for traveling active duty, vets, gov civilians, they have decent visitor's quarters and you can make reservations through Air Force Inns. The base is about a 20 minute drive from the Strip so you can stay here and save some money for when the bright lights call your name.
