Wards Island is one of those beach areas you won't easily find if all you know is Centerville. You can take the ferry directly here so it is surprising more people don't take advantage of it. The ferry lets you off and you can wander a short distance and enjoy the sense you are somewhere very far away from the city. Get away when it is hot and enjoy the beach without paying any airfare.
