Wow, I am pretty stunned by the negative reviews! I will say, the front office staff can be hit or miss, but I have never had a bad experience with reception. It's often not a particularly warm greeting, but no one has been rude. I witnessed one front office woman going above and beyond to help a mother resolve an insurance issue for her daughter.
My daughter is being monitored by Dr. Salevitz and I cannot say enough how wonderful he is! He is monitoring her eyes for a condition that he doubts she has, but doesn't want me to worry about trying to watch for the subtle signs. What's more, I don't really think of him as just an eye doctor my daughter sees every "x" number of months. Dr. Salevitz has been an incredible support to me as a first time mom. He likely isn't even aware of that, because I would guess this is just how he treats people in general (with kindness; a rarity these days). Sometime after my daughter started seeing Dr. Salevitz, she experienced possible seizures and was admitted to the Children's Hospital, sedated for an MRI (which was, thankfully, normal), and had an abnormal EEG (showing either actual seizure activity or at least a high likelihood for seizures). All of this ended with her on twice daily anticonvulsant medication and a "diagnosis" of, "we're not really sure whether she's having seizures, but we're going to treat them as such." The next time we saw Dr. Salevitz, I told him about all of this as I know eye conditions and neurology can be closely linked. Dr. Salevitz spoke to me, not as a doctor, but as a parent. He told me if it were his child, and he were not satisfied with the diagnosis or care, he would get a second opinion. He joked that he has gotten second opinions for dental work for his children and assured me that, when it comes to our children, if we are unsure of what a doctor is telling us then we should consult another doctor. He also said he would have her records from the hospital transferred to his office so he could review them, which he had done by our next appointment.
At a time when I felt at a loss for how to best care for my baby and my confidence in my parenting ability was rocky, Dr. Salevitz was a wonderful support, really empowered me to take action, and reminded me that just because one doctor says something doesn't mean we have to accept that as gospel. I am very grateful to Dr. Salevitz.
