Just before my high school graduation, I remember walking into Nick's desperately in search of a suit. Within about 45 seconds, I turned my heel and left: they clearly didn't have anything ready-to-wear that would fit me at the time, so I left to find solace in a soft pretzel and a lemonade.
Fast-forward to today. My current experience with Nick's is as an out-of-town member of a wedding party. My bud, the groom, set up a package for the men to have a block of matching full suits, to own. The process for an out-of-town customer is, at face value, pretty straightforward. Their website has an e-form for all of the proper measurements, specifications, and personal details to match you with the sizes that you need. Easy peasy, right?
The first sign of trouble came with my first call in to settle payment information and confirm the measurements that I'd already submitted online. I ended up on hold for an hour 'til the call was dropped, and the line was busy for the rest of the night. I called the following evening to better results: I was able to sort everything out pretty quickly, and was told to expect to receive the suit in the mail within two weeks. When the suit came in, I was surprised to find that the proportions of the jacket were near zoot suit levels of large. I regularly need to tailor almost all of my formal wear, so I wasn't expecting anything to fit like a glove, but it was a little ridiculous that there wasn't even any hint of notice sent to me re: size discrepancies given the measurements I'd submitted. It would've been great to know that their range of sizes weren't the most compatible with my measurements BEFORE shipping and BEFORE payment. There are a few other factors at play (differing factory sizes across brands, the fact that I wasn't on-site for a proper fitting) that I can acknowledge and forgive, but I do wish that there was more informative communication on their end.
Keep in mind that my experience is unique in that: (i) I am an out-of-town patron and (ii) I usually need a fitted 34 at the very largest. I'm sure that most people will have much easier experiences at Nick's, and the quality of the suits is pretty solid given the price. I was luckily able to salvage my suit with the help of a local tailor. I will say that I think their process for out-of-town customers is streamlined to a fault. For future out-of-towners: their sizes are more old-fashioned and can run larger than a lot of other brands... either way, call up your tailor and brace for impact.
