It is an hour to get to Mary Jo's, so it's been over a year since I've gone. My first impression walking in a couple weeks ago was wow, they've moved everything around. As I walked I around the store and finally made it to the quilting cotton area, I realized they have shifted their focus to upholstery (which is ironic because to me it seems you can throw a stone and find an upholstery store near you), maintaining the bridal/special occasion fabric, but drastically reduced the cotton section. Gone are the rows and rows of unique prints that made the trip to Mary Jo's totally worth the drive & lighter in the wallet. Sure they still have some cotton fabric, but I'd say it's about 65 - 75% less than what they previously carried.
The employees are not very friendly, many come off rude, but they have always been so. So much so that when you had a white unicorn moment, happening upon an employee that was kind and didn't make you feel like you were a nuisance, you felt blessed. The prices were not great and there were never any sales. Despite this, quilters still came for the great selection of fabric; regardless of rude employees or prices. However, now I believe quilters that travel great distances to come here expecting the old Mary Jo's will be just as disappointed as I was.
