Situated one level above Market Square, Las Velas tops my list for go-to authentic Mexican food in the 'burgh. It can be difficult to notice the front door at first glance, but it's worth the search. The entrance is tucked between Diamond Market and the Oyster House. A set of stairs takes you up and up till you reach the restaurant's bar and dining area. Frankly, if you don't start your visit with an order of the chips and queso you're missing out. The chips are clearly made in-house and served fresh each day. Pair those with the rich and creamy queso and you have a winning combination. For the main courses, I've tried a variety of the tacos on the menu, my two favorites being the Grilled Chicken Tex Mex style and the Tacos Checandole, which are the marinated pork option. Word of advice, if you have leftover queso add some to your tacos. You do not want that queso going to waste! Also, Las Velas margaritas are some of the best. A strawberry margarita on the rocks is my usual order. Though, I've tried the watermelon and raspberry ones on occasion; however, I end up back to the strawberry one by the second round. All in all, Las Velas is a great place for lunch (go early), dinner, or happy hour. The service is wonderful and the food is delicious, what more could you ask for?
