We went to Paik's upon recommendation of my daughter's previous instructor (traditional school with emphasis on fundamentals). Paik's at one time was indeed more traditional, but this place is now having issues that you need to be aware of before considering it. First, they are not teaching the fundamentals properly. Sloppy technique is praised as very good. Respect and following of the rules are not reinforced. Attempts to excel and advance tend to be discouraged. A student coming from a school focused on traditional values will regress significantly. Classes are only 30 minutes (tots) or 45 minutes (all others) long and due to the school admitting more young students than they can handle, only about 15 minutes of a tots class is used for instruction. The rest of the time is spent trying to get the students to listen to the teacher. There are back to back classes with no breaks between classes for instructors to be able to touch base with parents on progress or behavior. The format of the training is such that each session concentrates on one area only: sparring, board break, technique, form, or self defense. This can cause a problem when your schedule is limited. For example: a Monday and Wednesday schedule for one month looked like this: 2 sparring, 4 technique, 1 form and 1 self defense class. Paik's does have a well defined plan for advancement, but the school refuses to provide information on any of the forms in a format that can be used outside of the building (due to proprietary information concerns). Also, make sure that all promises are in writing because they are frequently forgotten. If you are a self-motivated student with a good memory who will take control of your own training and have a flexible schedule, you can advance rapidly. Most others should avoid this school.
