Maybe it's because I'm so used to eating New York-style bagels, but every time I've had a Montréal bagel so far, it never fails to underwhelm me. St. Viateur is no exception to this pattern, although in my opinion, it is better than Fairmount, which is more stale and less fluffy. I got a sesame bagel with regular Philadelphia cream cheese, and I guess the perks of it were that it was clearly freshly made and the coolness of the cream cheese served as a nice contrast. However, the slightly sweet aftertaste still threw me off and made me question if I was eating an actual bagel or a sweeter pastry. I guess if you're new to the Montréal bagel scene, here is your best bet. Common consensus among everyone that I've met is that you either love them or think it's a bit blasphemous against the art of bagels, so it wouldn't hurt to give them a try.
