It has been 2 years since I planned to write a review about Dr. Heiland after the death of my Mother. Dr. Heiland was the only doctor to finally take my Mother's complaints seriously as she had suffered from debilitating headaches and difficulty swallowing for over a year. After numerous specialist visits, extreme weight loss, and pain therapy, we were referred to Dr. Heiland after the neurologist noticed my Mother had started to have slurred speech. The first time we met Dr. Heiland, he listened to us describe the ordeal my Mother had been experiencing. He allowed her to finish and then explained to us that he had already read up on her history and was suspicious she had throat cancer. What? We had been told by another ENT that she absolutely did not have cancer and the symptoms she was experiencing were "an inflammatory process" and perhaps "more in her head." Dr. Heiland confirmed his suspicions by evaluating her throat with his camera and immediately scheduled her for surgery the following morning. The next morning he placed a tracheostomy tube in her neck so her airway would remain clear. We had no idea how large and constricting the tumor was, after all, we were unaware of its existence. Dr. Heiland, as difficult as it was to hear, informed us there was no cure for her cancer and the tumor was inoperable because it was attached to her brain stem. However, he referred her to a fantastic Oncologist who, along with Dr. Heiland, was able to relieve some of my Mother's suffering and give our family more time to be with her. We are blessed that we went to Dr. Heiland because as advanced as her cancer was, we would not have had as much time with her without his diagnosis. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments allowed her to survive for several months past the expected time for such an advanced case. Reading the reviews about him have been interesting. If you choose Dr. Heiland as an ENT, you will most likely be in the waiting room past your appointment time, and he sometimes speaks quickly. However, he is great at what he does and I would recommend his care to all.
