South Mountain is a perfect getaway from Camelback and Pietsewa. You still get a gorgeous view of the city, albeit a little further out. I was able to drive all the way to the top and find some trails to hike down from there. My AirBnb hosts suggested this was a great place to watch the sunrise over Phoenix - I struggled with seeing the sunrise at Camelback because I didn't want to hike in the dark.
South Mountain is still very much urban - there's a trail to the TV towers! Parking is easy here, with lots of large lots but that means more people and a lot of trash. :(
