  • The purpose of the AEROS spacecraft mission was to study the state and behavior of the upper atmosphere (thermosphere) and the ionospheric F-region. Of particular interest was the influence of solar ultraviolet radiation on the structure, photochemistry and dynamics of the atmosphere above 100 km altitude. INSTRUMENTATION: Five experiments provided data on the temperature and density of F-region electrons, ions and neutral particles, on the composition of ions and neutral particles, and on the solar ultraviolet flux incident on the topside ionosphere. SPACECRAFT: The AEROS satellite had a circular cylindrical shape with a diameter of 0.914 meter and a height of 0.710 meter. ORBIT: AEROS was launched into an elliptical, polar, and nearly sun-synchronous earth orbit. The spacecraft was spin stabilized at 10 rpm and was oriented with the spin axis toward the sun.
