| - I could not have chosen a better place to learn capoeira!
Firstly, I'll note that I take care of myself, but I'm by no means an athletic person or martial artist (yet). I hoped to change all that when I decided to stop just watching and learning about capoeira, and start doing it.
Professor Palhaçada is a fantastic professor, role-model, and capoeirista. He will push you hard and challenge your endurance until you are accomplishing things you didn't think you were capable of; but when you put forth the effort and finally understand a concept, you won't find a more encouraging and inspiring instructor! He has a great sense of humor and genuinely cares about the progress and well-being of each and every one of his students.
Some capoeira schools will teach the entire art as more of a cultural tradition or dance, and ignore the martial side entirely. I was VERY excited to learn that isn't the case here! All the techniques are taught true to the roots of the martial art: In the practical context of protecting yourself and becoming an effective martial artist, not just a performer. (Although you'll learn to perform too!)
I'm still very new, but every time I go to class, I find I'm learning something new and exciting about capoeira and its culture. In my short time here, I've already gained endurance, confidence, flexibility, and balance; I've learned the basics of the pandeiro (tambourine), I've experienced the very beginning basics of trampoline acrobatics, and most importantly, I've made a lot of new friends! Picking up Brazilian Portuguese is pretty fun too. :)
Did I mention the other students here are absolutely awesome? Everybody is welcoming, humble, and eager to bring out the best in each other and support their fellow students' development. The more advanced students that help with the teaching are all encouraging and patient (in spite of my clumsiness!), and every session ends with high fives and well-wishes.
When I show up early to the adult class, I see Palhaçada and co. work with the children, and not only are the kids having such a great time with their friends, they're learning some IMPRESSIVE skills too! I really want to get my little nephew involved. :)
If you're interested in the graceful martial art and rich culture that is capoeira, and you're ready to learn a lot and push yourself to accomplish some awesome things, try a free class, check your ego at the door, and prepare to have the time of your life. Axé!!
