| - I've been an off again, on again member at this particular Golds gym for 15 years. Through it's various incarnations as 'Ricky Steamboats Lake Norman Fitness', to Gold's Gym, to Peak Fitness to Gold's Gym again, so I can tell you about all the changes through the years.
The good: Currently the gym is being well taken care of equipment wise. The past year has seen numerous improvements all around. More new weight machines, new treadmills with built in televisions, a nice juice bar and a vastly upgraded card room complete with movie screen. It's REALLY nice.
The bad: They will charge you additional "upgrade fees" for the improvements to the gym and I'm investigating whether or not this is actually legal. The owner informs you via email beforehand, but I've never heard of a gym doing this before.
Also, some of the staff at this particular Gold's are not the friendliest of people. There are a few women working there (one blonde in particular) who won't even bother to say hello when you enter, and that's just downright shitty customer service. Nice way to care about your members.
Another negative is that the operating hours have changed SEVERAL times in the past year here. First it was open to 1am Monday through Friday (which was awesome), then it changed to 11pm, and just last month to 10 pm, without me being informed by email. I found out at closing time when I asked an employee about it. Nice.
Like the above reviewer, I'm also on the month to month no contract service, and I'm very strongly considering canceling. I love the upgrades, but I think the member service here sucks, and the constant changes to the operating hours are annoying.
To the owner: If you want to keep your members, stop with the ridiculous upgrade fees, hire friendlier staff and stop the changes to your operating hours.
