| - I first heard of La Grande about 2 or 3 years ago. I stopped by on a weekend afternoon and had a difficult time locating parking; being naive of the place, I didn't realize additional parking was available about 2 blocks away, as well as behind La Grande; between La Grande and Postino's. This is currently my favorite place to eat. It's a grocery store and a Pizzeria next door. At first it seems compact when walking in through the grocery store. They definitely utilize every inch of space they can muster up to display their goods. The food offerings are wide and are displayed above the counter/employee area from one end of the store to almost the other. The selection appears to be a mixture of French and Italian. I've been a regular for about 2 months now (as of the writing of this review) and frequent at least once each weekend; sometimes twice.
There's so much to choose from and I've just barely scratched the surface. I've definitely picked out some favorites that I'm having difficulty swaying away from; thus, preventing me from trying something new. I totally love the Coconut Samoan Latte. The small & large are apparently the same volume, which confused me when I ordered the large and my companion ordered the small; the difference between the two is that the large has an extra shot of espresso. I also love the Fresh Fish Club Sandwich, which comes with a side. I've had it with fries and with a mix of vegetables, which appeared steamed. I'm not sure what La Grande called the veggies or if it's a regular side offering (it had a really long name). They have muffins made in the original French-style that I highly recommend. It comes in a bag of 6 for $9. You also need to go for the Avocado Pizza with Prosciutto. The prosciutto is an extra $3, but is so worth it. I had Easter Sunday breakfast here and had a muffin sandwich with eggs, sausage, and cheese. It sounds simple, but tasted soooooo good. I think the butter made it taste so good. And desert....DON'T FORGET DESERT!!! I love the peanut butter pie.
Remember, this is a grocery so there are a number of other items to look through, which makes visiting all the more fun. There's a refrigerated area with all kinds of beer and non-alcoholic beverages. There's also an area with ready-made foods packed in plastic to-go boxes. A coffee bar is located towards the left as you come in. A grill is located outside. I'm not sure when the grill is used. I think it's used in the mornings. There are also a wide selection of wines. Further into it, there are a large number of non-food items such as shirts, scented candles, specialty soaps, books, etc.
The place has high traffic and as aforementioned uses all it's space, but there's plenty of room to sit both inside and outside. I love how wooden picnic tables are offered in the north of the grocery store. The neighboring La Grande Orange Pizzeria also offers plenty of seating for patrons of the Grocery Store. Outside seating is also located at the front of the store.
This place is definitely not boring and I tried to cover as much of what I've noticed and experienced so far. I highly recommend visiting if you haven't already, as you'll probably get hooked too. This corner of 40th St & Campbell (or at least I think it's Campbell) has much to offer to the food-lover with Ingo's to the north and Postino's to the west. I can't to wait to stop by again next weekend!
