| - The thing about Lux, is that it's the kind of place you don't realize is amazing until you can't go there regularly anymore.
When I worked in Central Phoenix, Lux was my daily coffee place on the days I got my ass out of bed early enough to stop before work after driving down from the far Northwest Valley. I'd stand in line like a zombie, roll my eyes at all the try-hard hipster clientele crammed into Lux's old space and pray that my coffee would take less than 15 minutes to come out. It was a means to an end.
Then, I got a promotion that put me at work closer to home, in the suburban wasteland known as the West Valley, where the only options for a morning java are the Circle-K on the corner or one of the 50 Starbucks locations within a mile radius. (I'm a VIP gold card holder now. Yay for me. *blows kazoo*)
But occasionally, I do get downtown. A friend might want to meet up for dinner at Windsor or I might need to turn in some paperwork down at the state department, and every single time I'm near, I find myself drawn up Central Avenue toward my old morning haunt.
Now, when I go to Lux, I welcome the cool reception from the baristas. I relish in the fact that the people who come here know what they want and how to order it properly. I enjoy the moment I get to take my hot latte and my carefully bagged pastry and find a dilapidated couch to perch on, where I can listen fondly to the nearby hipsters talking about art, music and other pretentious things, because it's so SO much more interesting than listening to a gaggle of PTA moms discuss "super cute" Pinterest DIY projects to make with their children Braden, Jaydyn and Vadinn.
And let's face it, Lux does make the best latte in town. The temperature and the ratio of milk to syrup to espresso is always perfect and it always comes out with a lovely bit of art on top, even when the line is backed up out the door. The pastries taste fresh, because they are made with real ingredients and served fresh, not made in a factory and shipped frozen across the country to be defrosted the night before they are served.
Joke about the hipsters and the "Great Aunt Susan's rent-controlled apartment in Bushwick" look all you want, Lux is popular for a reason and they don't ride on image alone. The quality is in the food and drinks and they remain far ahead of the competition. You will never be bored here, I can promise you that.
