  • This was the highlight of our weekend trip and my father's 60th birthday. The car selection was fantastic (Two Lamborghini Gallardos, one a spyder, a Ferrari 458, a Jaguar, and another Ferrari whose model eludes me.) Initially, we had a snafu with booking, and they had us booked a month early. This was a serious problem, as the experience is non-refundable, and the deposit is jaw-dropping. We sorted it out, but that was a close call with a one-star experience. After a pretty brief safety talk, we were handed the keys and told that we would be driving out into the desert, making five stops so that we could rotate through the cars. At the start, they walked us through putting each car in gear, keeping in convoy position so we didn't get separated by other traffic, and then we were off. Our pace car driver we later learned was a former pro racer on the Superbike circuit, so he had some driving chops, and when he felt comfortable we could handle the cars well, he let us open the taps. Driving along curving canyon roads in the Nevada desert at 100 miles an hour in a Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini spyder? Absolutely unforgettable. I found myself squealing with joy at each crescendo from the engine and enjoying the spectacular landscape around us. I even indulged in a little hooliganism as I'd drop gears and pump the pedal just to hear some more of that spectacular engine noise from behind my head. This is probably as close to heaven as I've gotten so far in life, and my dad and I joked that night that our trip was about to get much more expensive as we cashed in our investment funds for some Ferrari 458s. A bit of warning: unless you own a performance auto, you will go home and feel seething hatred for whatever you drive as you step on the pedal at the light or move to merge. The 0-60 on my old Merc just doesn't compare, and for a few days I found myself dreaming about pulling the paddle shifters on those fantastic cars. *Sigh* One day Adam. One day...
