  • When I moved in to San Melia in summer 2014, I was very impressed. However, in my 15 months of living there, I was consistently disappointed with many things at San Melia. There was so much turnover in the office. There were many times we went in one week to discuss something with office staff, and the next week, that person would not be working there anymore. What's more, the new person would have no idea what you were talking about, and the documentation that you filled out previously would somehow have vanished. It made getting things accomplished very difficult. The gates were broken most of the month, which was frustrating, because we were charged for the key fob every month. There was at least one month when the gates were open every day--and we were still charged the monthly fee. There was also a time when my key fob didn't work, which meant I couldn't enter the complex after office hours, unless I went in after someone. My name was also taken out of the directory, so I couldn't buzz myself in from my phone. Maintenance did not have a key to my apartment, which meant I either had to be home when they came to do maintenance, or I had to have them make a copy of my key. I went in to the office numerous times to get my door key copied, but the maintenance manager was never available. Office staff wanted to take my only key, keep it overnight, until maintenance could copy the key. Eventually the key was able to be copied, but the office tried to charge me for the extra keys. Many gates to the pool were broken. You either had to walk around to another gate--which was also most likely broken--or have someone inside the pool area let you in. Again, we were charged for these key fobs that didn't even work. There are so many hidden fees. You're charged for many different things on top of the advertised rent. We paid $100+ every month just in added fees. The way the water bill was calculated was quite ridiculous, too. When we had about 5 months left on our lease, we inquired about moving into a bigger apartment. The manager assured us we could do this and that people did it all the time. Of course, we knew there would be fees, and we were okay with that. We had an apartment selected, and had to wait for upper management to approve our request. The office manager told us he would contact us when upper management approved the request. When we hadn't heard anything in a few weeks, my husband went into the office to ask. The manager said they were working on it. Fast forward a few weeks, and San Melia has given the apartment we were holding to someone else--no notice from the office. When we went in to ask about it, we were told by another office worker that our request had been approved weeks ago--before the apartment had been given away, and before my husband had come in to ask about it. We were then told that apartments could not be held. Fair enough, but we had been told previously that we could hold the apartment, and were under the impression from the office staff that it was ours. Plus, the lack of communication regarding the approval process was disappointing. I chose San Melia primarily for its location. It was close to where I worked, and had many stores and restaurants nearby. I also felt extremely safe living there, despite the fact that the gates rarely worked. The complex is kept mostly clean, and is very quiet. Overall, it was not a terrible place to live, but the cons outweighed the pros for me.
