| - I actually really like this gym, but am aware of some major drawbacks.
Pros:
-Huge windows for lots of light
-Machines are new and well maintained
-I like that the staff are cold (some people on Yelp seem to be complaining about that, but I hate overly friendly customer service people, I just want to be left to my business. Also that's so much emotional labour for them and for me who has to respond in kind)
-Other members are friendly and nice to look at without getting too much in your business (though a very specific crowd: young hot Liberty Villagers. Good inspiration to get in shape IMO. I have been flirted with a few times by seriously built men, which I found very flattering as I was sweaty and in my bummy gym wear. Nice to hear my effort on the bicep machine is not going unnoticed. haha! I also like watching very very fit people do awesome workouts and moves that I can't. Very inspirational!)
-Clean very clean!
-Water fountains
-I love using the mirrored group fitness room for stretching (but when there is a class, there is too little space for stretching)
-Nice big change rooms, showers and sauna - all very clean
-Good sized lockers
Cons:
-Towels are too small and of bad quality
-Way way way too crowded at peak times (I have to go at off peak times or my workout is ruined because I have to keep pausing to wait for equipment - I literally consider the gym unusable 8-10am and 4-9pm weekdays)
-Not enough room for stretching when classes are in session
-The way everyone checks you out as you move around the gym (it seems to be set up this way with a catwalk through the centre of the gym - it feels very nerve wracking for someone who is not into being watched)
-Terrible music blaring 24/7 - shitty top 40 usually (people will wear headphones if they want to listen to music)
-Sauna is not very hot
-I hate the little TVs on the machines because they often don't work and they block my view of the city through the massive windows. Why obstruct that view for a barely working mini TV?
-More sinks than one in the bathroom would be very very useful. You have about 10 toilet stalls and 7 showers and 1 sink????
-HUGE SAFETY CONCERN: in the free weight area near the group fitness room, people leave weights and bars and crap everywhere. This is how people access that room... are you trying to trip them???? It seems really out of control lately. Much worse than it has ever been.
-It's more money than I really want to be paying for a gym I can only use in off peak hours. Maybe do a daytime membership that is cheaper? It's literally empty during business hours and as a freelancer I really can take advantage of that. I would prefer to work out 8-10am, but I've had way too many bad experiences to try. Will literally workout at home rather than fight the crowds.
-So many dudes just sitting on machines between reps... for ages... just sitting... and sitting... and texting... and sitting... If you are breaking for more than 20sec, just get the hell off the machine so someone can use it while you rest!!!!!!!!! If you see someone lingering around as you just sit there, offer them the machine. Like, if I am trying to do an all over workout for general fitness, rather than pumping up one muscle group, I want to a variety of machines in a circuit... you are messing up my circuit dude as you pump up those arm muscles... go use the free weights!
