  • My daughter was passing through on the way to the airport, and asked if we would like to have brunch with her. Let me see, watch the NFC Championship game or have lunch with one of my Beloved daughters? Hmm...NOT! I am not a person that is often satiated by spectating sporting events. I always want to be outside doing things, instead of feeling that life is passing me by as I am awashed and entertained for hours by television programs. It was a no-brainer, and the only question that was left to be answered was the question as to where? I chose Harlow's for nostalgic purposes. There was a time during the dotcom boom, that I was part of a Tempe startup that eventually exploded, then got bought out. And Harlow's and many other downtown Tempe restaurants were our regular haunts. We had catered breakfast meetings, and many of our team lunches were spent at Harlow's. I had brought my daughters here on occasion; but they were so small back then that they didn't even remember that they had been here during those times. Not much has changed with this restaurant. It's still in a small strip mall with ample parking on a slow day. High-rises have been erected nearby, but the building has been improved upon after all these years. Inside, the wood paneling reminds me of the 1940's - 1950's era when this was considered high-end and high class. Now, it's politely referred to as "nostalgic." However, the workers here also carry with them the same kind of old-fashioned courteous and efficient "nostalgic" service that most people expect from small diners of this sort. There is a significant amount of options to satisfy every palate. I had the steak and eggs, my wife had the Cheeseburger, and my daughter had the grilled cheese sandwich. Their food is none too spectacular for this Tempe Icon, but is more than acceptable in its basic taste and portion size. The walls are littered with Cinema posters from a bygone era, and still provide great conversation pieces. All in all, even though this hasn't changed in all this time. I was glad that the best parts of this establishment still remained true to this day.
