| - Stayed here for 5 nights while on vacation in Montreal, got the room for $80/night via Expedia.ca's "40% off promo" (wherein we knew it would be downtown and the price and number of stars, but not the hotel name until after confirmation). We had a room with 2 queen beds, a desk with computer, 2 arm chairs, bathroom with tub/shower.
The lobby reception staff were mostly young, but friendly and helpful! I called down to the front desk for a small request (more tissue) and it was met with a quick response, much appreciated. Despite her best intentions though, when I asked for recommendations of good places to eat nearby, the staff member at the desk simply hi-lited St. Catherine St. and said "anywhere within 2 blocks north or south of here has lots of places!"... So, needless to say, it wasn't very specific.
The location of the hotel is great though!!! If you plan on walking or taking the subway/metro, it's ideal. About a 3 min walk to the orange line station Lucien-L'Allier, and about a 6 min walk to the green line station Guy-Concordia. Takes you nearly everywhere you would want to go as a tourist. :)
The rooms themselves are what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel... Perfectly adequate and functional, but otherwise nothing special, and definitely no-frills. Outdated furniture (although the TV seemed pretty modern despite being housed in an old school wooden hutch). Mattresses were fine, but I found the pillows too soft (but this is a very individual preference, I like firm mattresses and thick firm pillows, but of course that's not for everyone!) Weirdly the comforters were not inside duvet covers, but instead tucked between flat sheets.... Which easily move out of place, so I'm not sure how they keep the comforters themselves hygienic between guests! Regardless, the beds and linens seemed perfectly clean.
Bathroom was adequate, we were on the 6th (out of 7) floor - good water pressure. Clean bathroom, although dated. Only thing I really had a problem with was that the shower curtain was stained and scummy at the bottom - not shockingly so, but enough to notice if you looked (that pink stuff that builds up over time). I didn't mention it to the front desk but wish I had! Towels were not soft, just functional. Didn't use the toiletries so can't comment on those.
Our room had a desktop computer which was slowwww and didn't have a consistent Internet connection (and was using IE.... Yikes! Where's Chrome?!) Fairly useless, not worth having in the room, they should be removed. Glad I brought my iPad!! Wi-fi connection (DaysInn) is free, no password needed. Not really fast, but had 2-3/3 bars at all times.
Finally I must mention the air conditioning...... We had a very large window A/C unit, which was noisy when on, and very very finicky / touchy! (instructions basically tell you to adjust the dial by 1/15" of an inch every 15 mins until desired temp is reached.... LOL! I thought I broke it a couple times.) Despite how temperamental it was and the noise when it ran, it did keep the room cool (highly necessary in the brutal July 2012 heat/humidity). Unglamourous and ugly, and obscured the window for the most part..... But at least it did its job, overall. Haha!
