  • The much-anticipated downtown Chipotle opened to the public last Thursday, adding to the growing selection of lunch spots around East 4th and Euclid. In what was probably a blessing in disguise, the bitter cold seemed to keep many folks at bay, leaving the staff with a relatively manageable crowd. The food was on par with just about every Chipotle I've been to--massive burritos, tacos, or bowls filed with a selection of meat, very tasty white or brown cilantro-lime rice, guacamole, salsa, cheese, and/or sour cream. The decor is, again, on par with just about every other Chipotle. There aren't too many tables available, but it looked like nearly everyone was getting their food to go. The staff was friendly and cheerful, but they are clearly still working out the kinks in their operation: I was fairly pleased having my food in hand just over 19 minutes of being the 23rd person in line. I've heard horror stories, though, about picking up food after ordering online: waiting 30 minutes to get the food (including the time where they finally start making your order) and additional time spent while a large office order has to get broken up because each of the people need to pay separately. With the growth of East 4th sit-down restaurants and plenty of new spots like Potbelly's, Jimmy John's, J. Gumbo's, Chipotle, and the Subway on Ontario, clearly the winners are the workday lunch crowd around Public Square. I do hope, though, that the abundance of supply doesn't shutter some of the Arcade and Colonial Marketplace tenants who offer more diverse and less mainstream fare.
