Having no previous tiki bar experience, my husband and I were exited to give Porco Lounge and Tiki Room a try during their inaugural week. The cocktail menu is small, which allows the mixologists to focus on ensuring perfection each time in lieu of flipping through an unfamiliar book of recipes. I started with the Mai Tai (a proper gauge of any tiki bar), and my husband started with the Zombie. Both cocktails were fantastic - neither very sweet - which elicited a welcome sigh of relief from my sweet-cocktail-averse husband. Balance was the word that came to mind first, and remained a continued theme throughout the other cocktails we tasted that evening.
We were also offered tastings of house made falernum as well as the orgeat, both of which make the finest bottled versions seem similar to what kool-aid means to fruit juice. These house made mix-ins are the key to the tiki cocktail kingdom.
The decor is a very carefully curated tribute to tiki culture, which manages to be simultaneously cute and sultry without being at all tacky. Check out the tiki room in the back - perfect for a romantic date.
They've also brought back 'tiki hour', where their fantastic concoctions are discounted (from their very reasonable starting price) by $3 a cocktail.
My advice - head up there today and sit at the bar, have a chat with the mixologist, and leave the rest in their capable hands. :)
