  • Cue the circus music. Here's the deal; the staff are epic. Talented, communicative, fun, friendly, inviting, worthy of mass praise across the board. There are few coffee shops in phoenix that offer a non-pretentious experience, that also happen to employ logic based staff who operate with an above average level of competency. It's impressive to find this in PHX, let alone at a 24 hour spot. The staff get 5 HUGE Stars, no doubt. ...and they make the best MF'ing Jackfruit Breakfast Burrito this mouth has ever masticated, courtesy of Chef-God Ivan the Great. If you don't know what Jackfruit is, get your ass in here and nom your way to a quivering mouth-gasm. Latte's are on FLEEK by the always impressive Super-Brenda, and so is the wi-fi speed - which is never slow, even when the place is stacked with the always entertaining, caffein saturated college crowd. I really can't say enough about the return on investment from an employee & food/drink standpoint. You won't find better in PHX - especially at 2am. So why 1 Star? Because despite how exceptional many of the staff are, the owners clearly have no concept of what effective business leadership requires. Their staff operate from a dwarfed position of generalized disenfranchisement. Spend 10 minutes with any of them and you can see how unappreciated, neglected, and overall, undervalued they are. We see this in the way they are treated, the lack of resources that they are provided with to make the UB experience what it really COULD be, lack of time-off, open all holidays (which is BS), etc. This is not information that the employees disseminate, but after talking with most of them at length, and witnessing the truth of it from the "customer" perspective - over the course of weeks of 1st person exposure, the truth becomes evident - pissing off us loyal customers. As a multi-business owner, I understand that there is nothing more critical for business success than employee satisfaction. When your employees feel valued, and appreciated, they become the most influential mouthpiece a company can ever hope to have - worth their weight in gold. The fact that Urban Beans' owners do not recognize this - illustrated by the sheer number of AWESOME, yet broken-down employees Urban Beans employs - is infuriating for those of us who respect the work these hustlin' folks produce - in the trenches, building the Urban Beans brand with every new customer who walks through the door. Having been to Urban Beans dozens of times over the past several months, my wife and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know many of the great staff here. As much as I don't want to support UB ownership, I cannot imagine NOT supporting their employees, who make the brand what it is. They are the lifeblood, the heartbeat of the UB experience. Without them, UB is nothing more than another failed, vacant commercial property, skid marking the Phoenix landscape. So, to re-cap: *Crappy ownership *Failed management *Talented (yet undervalued) chefs & baristas *MF'ing EPIC Jackfruit Burritos *Dope ass latte's *Favorable wifi *Casual, friendly, non-pretentious environment *Open 24 hours ...and can I just say, WTF is with all the damn FISH art all around the place? As a visual artist, I appreciate all expressions of creativity, but enough is enough. Well done UB employees, for rising to the occasion, despite all the obstacles that are constantly being placed in your way. Mad respect. ((Hat Tip)) UB owners/managers - get a fu#!ing clue. Business management 101, take care of your staff.
