| - I've been waiting to try out the Happy Hour at Herbs & Rye for as long as it's been open. Last night we finally timed it right. But I can't remember ever being as woefully disappointed in a HH menu as I was here.
First, the good:
-- The ambience. Loved it - all that dark wood, flocked wallpaper, cozy, dimly-lit, romantic.
-- The service. Our waiter, Ronny, couldn't have been more attentive and patient.
But it went downhill quickly when we realized that there was nothing on that HH menu that would work for us. The wine was a piss-poor selection of just a couple of whites or reds that neither of us would drink. The beer? What bar has NOTHING on tap??? I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband wasn't blown away either by the selections or prices.
As for the food, the only two HH appetizers available were clams or mussels. We don't eat either of them. Flatbreads (not on HH)? The price for the one with steak was the same as one with just tomatoes. What a concept. We weren't about to bite, knowing we can get the same tomato and cheese flatbread at Kona Grill HH for nearly 2/3 less. Sure, it's not the same atmosphere, but you can't always eat the atmosphere.
The only main course available was linguine with clams. Not clam sauce, which I (but not hubby) would eat, but clams, just like in the appetizer. I'm shell-averse. I don't like to work for my food; if I did, I'd have stayed home and cooked.
The steaks would have been okay, if we were craving a juicy steak. We never crave juicy steaks, and had already exceeded our beef quota for the week. We weren't about to exceed it just because it was there, since it's never a first choice for us anyway.
In the end, we had our drinks - a low-end beer for Herb and a very good non-HH Riesling for me - and then went for pizza, and it was infinitely more satisfying.
