| - I have been to Vegas so many times that it has been dubbed my second home and we even thought about buying a beautiful new home in the desert of sin city. I can remember what each casino was prior to it's renovation or before it even existed, every hole in the wall restaurant (that we like), found a used needle in my room while staying at the Rio (see Rio review), own a timeshare on the strip, been to conventions, (you get the point, Ive been to Vegas A LOT), but for some reason Or another, NEVER been to Fremont street. Although I had seen it on TV plenty of times and driven by downtown plenty of times, I had NEVER walked Fremont Street or stayed at a hotel in downtown so I figured I would try something different (as if I was missing out). Enter Fremont Street.
Now, why oh why would ANYONE want to come here??!!
Well, if you want the slower-paced Vegas experience that has more of a chill factor instead of the hustle bustle glitz and glam Vegas package, then you will definitely enjoy Fremont Street. Downtown is older and more casual, sort of reminds me of a raunchier Reno whereas the strip is more about laser lights, pool parties, short shorts and sumptuous $50 buffets.
Fremont Street is definitely "different" than the strip. If you're about the Strip life, you will not enjoy Fremont Street. If you are looking for a slower paced or "different" experience, you will enjoy it. Cheap eats, cheap drinks, walking from casino to casino beneath a covered atrium that they use for light shows and zip lining. There are some great and cheap food choices at some of the casino's here and you can just feel that you are surrounded by so much history although most people are attracted to the modern-day element of the strip. My husband always wanted to visit Binion's as we are avid poker fans and it was so cool playing in their poker room even though there was only 1 table and a handful of regulars playing at the time.
I can definitely picture people walking from outdoor bar to outdoor bar, watching the shows in between drinks, dancing to the outdoor music and having fun just standing around/walking around. Sounds great, right? Well there are quite a few homeless people and street entertainers here, so I would be weary about having TOO much fun. Get your eyes ready when it comes to the street entertainers. I understand it's Vegas but there are some things I wish my eyes did not see on the street. Probably not the best place for young kids. We brought ours and so did a bunch of other people but I'm sure they would not have missed out on anything by not coming here... However for the older crowd I think Fremont Street is definitely worth coming to at least once in your life for the "experience".
