| - We just recently moved to Madison, and we've been hearing a lot about Old Fashioned. Supposedly they have the best cheese curds in all of Madison so of course we had to check it out.
We arrived around 6:10 pm, and the wait was only 20 minutes, which isn't bad for a restaurant with a reputation of being one of the best in town. Like many modern restaurants they use "The List" app so you can watch the wait-list and know if your table is almost ready.
When we were eventually seated the first things I noticed were how loud it was and the dim lighting. I understand that The Old Fashioned is a bar, but this was "can't even hear yourself think" levels of noise, let alone hear the other people at the table.
The service was more than adequate but nothing stand out. Our drinks were kept topped off, and the server checked in often enough. Luckily we had all been looking at the menu when we were waiting so we were able to put an order in right away.
We ordered a round of drinks, deep fried cheese curds, and some burgers. The Old Fashioned has an impressive selection of beers. They have 40 beers on tap and even more in bottles, as well as, an interesting selection of old fashions. I do wish that their tap list was more descriptive, Many of the items on the list just had the name of the beer with city/state of origin, and there didn't appear to be any type of order to the list. Like things were not clustered together. Tell me what kind of beer it is! I don't want to ask about 40 beers to find the best fit for my pallet.
With that said, both of the beers (Black is the New Orange - chocolate/orange flavored lager & Warped Speed Scottish Ale) I ended up ordering were on point. I appreciate being able to order some solid craft beers I haven't had before.
The deep fried cheese curds were not as amazing as people lead me to believe, but they weren't awful. I do not think they deserve the title of "the best in Madison." They were VERY greasy and lukewarm when t hey arrived at the table. The breading was very light and the cheese was gooey, which is a good thing. I just can't overlook the amount of grease and below expected temperature. At this point I would give the honor of best cheese-curds to Graze, but our hunt for "the best" continues. Old Fashioned, your cheese curds let me down like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
I ordered a Wisconsin Burger for the main course, and my wife ordered an Old Fashioned Burger. Both burgers were ordered medium, but we received burgers that were more like medium-well. There was no detectable pink left in the burger. Regardless, the burgers were very juicy, and the cheese was plentiful and absolutely coating the burger. It was a little greasy, yes, but it's a burger. When I order a burger that has this much cheese on it, please just cram the fat into my arteries. I can honestly say, while a simple burger, the Wisconsin Burger delivered by Old Fashioned meets my expectations for a good burger. It was one of the best burgers I have had in some time, regardless of being served more on the well side than requested.
On the topic of the bathrooms, why are they so small, considering the size of a crowd that the establishment is pulling in? There shouldn't be so much waiting in the men's room of a bar.
Overall, The Old Fashioned delivered a massive beer list that is not for those who have trouble making decisions and dang good burgers. If you really have a taste for cheese curds, go for it, but I know you could do better else where. I would come for the meal and leave for drinks elsewhere because a conversation is fairly difficult here.
