| - If there were more than 5 stars, I would give them--tonight was among the top 5 dinners out I've ever had. We made the happy mistake of deciding where to eat at 5:30--happy because when I called to make a reservation, the tables were full until 8:30, but they offered us a kitchen/sushi bar seat at 7:15. This contributed to the amazingness of the experience--not only did we get to see every delicious dish being prepared, but because we were sitting in front of the plating station, the chef actually took the time to explain a few of the dishes to us.
We skimmed the entree menu (which all sounded good), but opted to go for more of a tapas style dinner because we wanted to try so many things. We had the bacon wrapped quail egg robata (amazing) and the chicken robata (quite good, but probably the lowest point of the meal), the goat cheese spring roll (completely out of this world--like a savory blintz, only better), the empanadas (the sambal sauce is like a smoky, spicier thai chili sauce and we were almost licking the plate), and the pork belly (the reviewers are right--you MUST try this!). Then we got two maki rolls--the Tamari roll and the TNT roll. Both are definitely for the fish lover but were incredibly tasty, balancing spicy with the sweet flesh of fish, and the tempura batter on the TNT roll gives it a texture reminiscent of crispy fish skin. After watching several delicious-looking desserts make their way out, we got the pandan flan (with a crispy coconut crumble and lychee that elevate this dish with their incredible texture) and the chocolate tart, which came on a plate painted with dulce de leche with a side of hibiscus marinated strawberries...the chocolate had a spicy flavor (I believe from jalapenos?) that made it absolutely divine.
Now, onto the service--we were early for our reservation, so the host chatted with us briefly before we enjoyed a drink at the bar (and the bartender kindly gave us the Happy Hour discount although it was 7:00 on the dot), and then returned to our seats several times throughout the meal to see how we liked everything. Our waitress was also quite pleasant, answering our many questions about the food we saw and the ingredients involved.
If the service had been half as good we still would come back, but the impeccable care taken with each guest and the fantastic quality of the food (consistent across NINE different dishes) ensure that we will return many, many times.
