  • I've only been a golfer since 1986, touched a club for the first time in my life when I was 34 years old. I never got really good at the game. At my peak performance in the late 1990's I practiced & played often to achieve a 13 index. I'm an golf club junkie, I have the buy / sell / trade habit real bad. I trade out club sets almost every year. I've owned every brand over the past 31 years. I loved my 1980's vintage USA made Pings i-3 but they had stiff steel shafts that I couldn't optimally hit. Stupidly sold them and then kept searching for the perfect set. The past couple of years I've been screwing around with Callaways and then Adams Speedline in my search for some more yardage and hopefully more accurate shot making. The results have been inconsistent and paltry. Just recently I tried out the 2016 Ping G series driver and fairway woods. The discovery was a Whoa! moment. I can hit them good, the ball goes farther towards the place that I aimed. Oh shit, does this mean that I'm really a "Ping guy"? I'm sort of peeved about the prices of new golf clubs. Recently I had a conversation with a golf equipment sales representative who told me that the cost to make a driver over in China is about $7. So how do we justify a $299.99 "discount" retail price on this driver? Yeah, the glossy 2 page advertisement spreads in the golf magazines cost serious coin, but the mark-up on clubs is obscene. I was a musical instrument retailer for 7 years, my profit margin never exceeded 20% before taxes. So I look for the Ping clubs that I desire on eBay. For demo clubs in reasonably good condition I get a 40% discount from reputable golf retailers. Okay, so what's my point here? Ping clubs, they work for me. I prefer them over the many other brands that I've owned and played. They cost too much money. Golf like life can be cruel. Is there golf in heaven? Can we play for free?
