If you find yourself in this part of town, then the opportunity to take a trip up or down the Monongahela Incline shouldn't be missed. The experience and views are full of 5-star worthiness.
The incline can be accessed via the 205 West Carson Street building at the bottom of Mount Washington or via the 5 Grandview Avenue building at the top. Either way, exact reasonable fare--there are change machines available--is collected at the top station.
The buildings and funicular cars associated with the Monongahela Incline are really well-kept and nostaglic. I consider the buildings--especially the one on Mount Washington--to be mini museums.
If you're riding up the incline the view that awaits you is a spectacular one. Absolutely breathtaking views of one of my favorite skylines. It's fun to point out Pittsburgh landmarks such as Heinz Field, PPG Place, Pitt's Cathedral of Learning, and different bridges from the Patrick T. Fagan Overlook located just steps from the incline station.
Weather permitting and if you have time, do explore the Mount Washington community on foot. You'll find great little coffee shops, bars, eateries, and colorful murals in this charming area. My family and I enjoyed a stroll through Mount Washington yesterday during a mission to buy batteries at nearby Foodland.
Go. Enjoy. Take lots of photos.
