  • After walking by this place countless times, we finally decided to give it a try. Inside of the restaurant is clean and modern, with a bar centered in the middle. I didn't ask, but it appears that there are no soft drinks, and I didn't see anyone drinking tea, just water (which is what we had) and beer/wine. We got the Sweet Potato fritters with sorghum butter to start and it was impressive. Great fry on the fritters and a sweet, rich flavoring on the butter. My entree was full of flavor but had many technical errors. I got the Fried Chicken platter with Mac & Cheese, Sautéed Mushrooms, and Green Beans. Chicken was just slightly overcooked with dry meat, I did choose the white meat instead of the dark, which probably would have been more forgiving moisture-wise, but I expected a finer attention to detail from a restaurant specializing in southern cooking. Mushrooms were very flavorful but perhaps placed in a very cold bowl because they were lukewarm while the rest of my food was hot. Green beans were full of flavor, perfectly seasoned, but very stringy. My girlfriends shrimp and grits were outstanding, I kinda wish I had gotten the same thing! Had I gotten this meal anywhere else it probably would have been close to a 4 star review, but as a self-proclaimed Southern Kitchen, I expected these fundamental dishes to be perfect, especially 1 block away from Trade & Tryon. I'll be back and at least I know what to look for on the next visit. As a non-profit, they have a noble cause, which you can read more of on other reviews!
