  • Another ice cream place in the Valley...this one coming with a lot of buzz so on Saturday night, my date and I had to come check it out. As we pulled in to the parking lot and made our rounds up and down the rows of spaces, we noticed that there were a lot of people outside. Not to be deterred, we parked and made our way to the door. Luckily the huge gathering of people were for Lou Malnati's next door. Our wait at Creamistry was incredibly short. The menu is extensive - pick your size, pick your base (milk, organic milk, sorbet (water-based), or coconut milk), pick your flavoring and any additional add-ons. Each add in costs $$$ which is to be expected and can get pricy. The place isn't necessarily over-priced, it is what you make it. After some back and forth with the cashier - details at the end - my date and I actually chose the same thing. Coconut milk with chocolate. Plain, nothing over the top, the best way to judge an ice cream place's worthiness if you ask me. She had the kid size, I had the small. The order goes in line with all of the others, ingredients are weighed out into a kitchen aid bowl, the person mixing hooks it up and the liquid nitrogen comes flowing out. If anything, it's great theater and people get real excited when they see the smoke fill the air. The result - super creamy, fresh ice cream. In our case, the coconut milk makes it more like a custard. Very creamy, leaves a film in the inside of your mouth. Not very chocolatey. If there is a next time, I will go with a dairy base instead. Experience was decent, so why dock the two stars? One, no one smiled or seemed happy to be there. The guy doing the mixing was banging the bowls and the equipment around and the whole shop didn't look like it had only been open for a few months. The person doing the mixing has the opportunity to make it a grand experience for the customer. In this case it came up short. Two, what I originally wanted to order I was told "we can't do that" by not just the cashier, but the manager on duty as well. Simple request...I wanted an affogato with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla. You are going to make the vanilla right? Why not just make it chocolate and charge me an up-charge? Simple request, no? The cashier did ask the girl next to her first if they could do that, which in turn ended up with her asking the MOD, who said no. When pressed if I could just buy the ice cream and an espresso shot and make it myself, he said there was no way they could ring that up either (which I do believe). Will I be back? Most likely not, just because of the ho-hum customer service. Neat concept and I think that my kids would get a kick out of it, but I will probably wait until we pass another location.
