  • We went there for lunch recently. The first thing you'll notice when entering are the rather ratty-looking dog food bowls sitting on the tables, filled with peanuts in the shells. Uh, what? "Uncle Bear" is the name of the owner's beloved family dog, and the backyard dog pen motif is carried throughout the place, with chain link fence dividers, pictures of family dogs everywhere, and dog bowls on the tables. The decoration is nicely done, kinda cute, and as someone pointed out, the shells on the peanuts would protect them from whatever was in the bowls before. The menu is huge, with all kinds of American and Tex-Mex favorites, but imagine my surprise that as I am eating peanuts from a dog bowl I see a simple burger and fries is $9.50. Other dishes were similarly priced, some much more, and there were only a tiny handful of lunch specials. Our wait person was attentive and enthusiastic, but she had a lot of trouble collecting the orders, especially for extra difficult items like, "hold the mayo." Service was very slow, but finally the food was delivered. In the first indication that perhaps Uncle Bear may have lent food prep advice in addition to his name and utensils, we asked the wait person about the bright red vinaigrette served with the salad. She assured us it was raspberry vinaigrette, but it was actually ranch dressing with raspberries smashed into it. My Ocean Beach 'Shroom Burger Plate was very disappointing. I'm the kind of person who sometimes skips the sandwich and just goes for the fries, so I may be a bit jaded, but these were terrible, mostly soggy and chewy. And as the Woody Allen joke goes, "...and such small portions, too!" The burger was OK, it was actually 1/3 pound even though the menu did not mention that. But it was just an average burger with a cold slice of Swiss and canned mushrooms, with one greenish tomato slice and a 2-inch layer (no kidding) of shredded lettuce. It was exactly the same thing you get at a fast food place, only at three times the price. So, it seems that Uncle Bear's is much more bar than grill, it's probably a very fun place for happy hour or a game, especially with the many large screen TVs around the perimeter. They serve Four Peaks and other local beers, and with nachos it'd be a great place to watch the World Series or whatever. Just not so much for lunch.
