| - I had attempted to create an open booking for a special event.
The first time I spoke with the sales manager, he informed me that the special event price was $80 (CAD) a night. He told me it was the best rate ever (let's ignore that it's not true, and that everyone says that they're providing the best rate ever). He then informed me that he was going to contact me in a few days to provide me with the contract.
After more than a week of not hearing from him, I contacted him again, and we basically had a repeat of the previous conversation. Then he tries to play me by increasing the price by $10 and asking, "That's the price we agreed on, yes?"
"... No" was the only response I could get out because I was a little surprised to discover that he was trying such shenanigans with me. I expected boondoggling (that's right, boondoggling) like that from some shady motel, not a well known hotel chain.
Maybe I should have taken that as a sign to walk away... He quickly changed his tune when I gave him the price he had originally stated. Then I waited for the contract. Which never came. Instead, he sends me a message that pretty much said, "Tell the event guests to call this number and mention this code."
In the meantime, I had open-booked at three other hotels (one of them not even as nice as Four Points) where they almost immediately had a contract ready and filled out with details on prices, rights and responsibilities from all parties involved, etc.
Finally, two weeks ago, I happened to be in town so I decided to stop by all of the hotels that I had open-booked to get a good idea of what event guests could expect from their accommodations. (I didn't want them staying someplace ratchet so I figured I would verify). The front desk customer service was atrocious. There was a girl who literally stared, sullen and unsmiling. She was pretty, so a smile would have only helped her already attractive face. Then there was a guy who begrudgingly responded to me, but only because I was right in front of him asking questions. After seeing the room, I asked if he could provide me with the contract information. He hesitated and said that there wasn't any contract information available. No group rate information available. No information available at all about the event in question. The fact that they were so hesitant to leave a legitimate paper trail was very suspect. The front desk guy told me that I needed to speak to the sales manager again to get the special events rate. I'm sure the rate will magically change (again) if I were to call... I'm not setting people up for a bait and switch. I am so out. So are all of the event guests.
I threw in an extra [*] because the rooms are very nice, and modern. The parking lot seems small though, but I could certainly be wrong about that. And I saw nothing nearby as far as restaurants are concerned.
In Summary: Boondoggling, you hear me? Boondoggling.
