I know people love this place, but I just can't get behind it. This was my third visit, but my first to this location, and my first attempt a lunch.
We got the BLT on gluten free waffles. Much to my dismay, Starving Artist doesn't have a "neutral" gluten free waffle. So the only options are banana waffles or potato waffles. Potato made sense but the server assured us that the banana waffle was what most people did and that it worked. It really doesn't work. Add to that chewy bacon, a side salad that was simply greens with no dressing, and a side of fruit that included a grapefruit that was well past its prime and it was just an unfortunate experience all around.
I don't understand why they don't just serve a regular GF waffle. Amazing recipes exist (and I have a GF/vegan recipe I'd share if they need one).
The experience may have been okay if we'd ordered breakfast waffles, but my other two visits were for breakfast and weren't much better - I think we're done trying SA. We'll keep going to Boom next door instead.
Also, the final nail in the coffin is the cash only policy. Cash only is one this if you're selling coffee and pastry but being a sit down restaurant with a cash only policy and pointing people to an ATM that charges high fees shows a clear disrespect of customers. This would have been a deal-breaker except that my son had his heart set on GF waffles and I had nowhere else to turn.
