| - I play a fair amount of poker in Vegas and have played in nearly all of the rooms in town. Planet Hollywood's poker room has emerged as the early favorite. I really enjoy playing here. Every poker room is different, so I'll tell you what you can expect here, and then decide for yourself if it's for you or not.
First, the stakes. PH mainly runs $1/$2 cash games, with the occasional $2/$5 game. If you're looking for high stakes, this isn't the place for you. Go across the street.
The tournaments run 4 times a day with a $80 buy in and unlimited reentries through the first few levels. They usually draw between 20-30 people. They usually meet their guaranteed prize pools, but rarely draw massive amounts of players. I haven't played the tournaments, but I've heard they're good and fun to play, and the structure is fair. From what I've observed, chopping the prize money is pretty common.
The cash games are very casual, with a lot of tourists mixed with a few locals. They tend to be lively, more outgoing, and more casual than the more serious rooms where many people don't talk and/or have headphones on. Buy-ins are $100-$300, with a very liberal straddle, up to $20, depending your position. Straddles are pretty common here. There are high hand bonuses, from $50 for quads up to a progressive for a royal flush in a particular suit, depending on the day. Wait times for a seat are usually very minimal, especially at night.
The poker room is located in the middle of the casino in the Pleasure Pit. Music is always playing, and it can get pretty loud. Dancers dance in sexy outfits from the other gaming tables at night starting at 8pm-with double the dancers on the weekends. It's a club atmosphere here, and it can be hard to hear for some. But it's a lot of fun, especially if you like music, and you're a little more outgoing. The location is also a big plus-right in the heart of the strip. You're close to many other poker rooms and right across the street from Cosmopolitan (similar atmosphere) and Bellagio (and the fountains!). Planet Hollywood itself also has so much to offer, from the shopping to the restaurants, the concerts, the bars, and lots of action.
The staff and dealers are excellent. They're friendly, fun to play with, experienced, and do their jobs very well. Chip runners are always quick to get you more chips whenever you need to buy more. The waitresses are always there to take your order and are quick to get your drinks. Again, wait times are minimal. Top of the line staff. They'll take care of you.
$1/hr in comps if you have a Total Rewards card, plus free drinks...a big plus in Vegas.
It really depends on what kind of atmosphere you're looking to play in, but if you're looking for a fun, casual, outgoing club type of place to play that's right in the middle of all the action and in the heart of Vegas, and/or maybe you're new to poker and want to play somewhere not as intimidating, Planet Hollywood's poker room is the place to go. I highly recommend it. You'll have a good time.
