| - This library received an architectural award, but not much else. It is quite a new library.
The enclosed private space room for quiet study are not that private. They are basically four shared cubicles, and you have no space between yourself and the other users.
This library is also half left over for the kids and teenagers. You will see lots of kids running around and teens rummaging around the place. There is also a lot of tutoring of teens going on too. There are tables on the side that look out over the parking lot and road, but the tables are not that comfortable - and again, you will be distracted with all of the kid activity straight ahead. Most people do not read at the tables, but instead Internet browse on their laptops. It has a similar vibe to a hipster cafe - but at least it is free.
Scottsdale Public Library only allows books out for two weeks, and they do not automatically renew the book, (if there are no holds on them), unlike the Phoenix Public Library system. You have to renew the books the day before - or else you will be charged a lot of money. I guess Scottsdale Public Library 'needs the money.'
I also noticed another strange habit at this particular library. A few of the librarians like to stare at the patrons as they meander, browse and use the services of the library. Are they doing some type of library user survey-project?
Overall, as an avid reader and another unemployed PhD, I do not feel that comfortable using this particular library's services.
