| - Overall, this was the best apartment I've ever lived in. Overall, had a great experience but there is always room for improvement.
Pros:
- Professional and generally courteous staff. Generally try to be very friendly, which is appreciated. Many places, at least in my experiences, don't seem to care about customer service anymore.
- Very nice facilities staff members. The foreman can come off as nonchalant / uncaring (thinking about one particular situation, where they had a non-staff contractor finish counter-tops, and didn't follow the instructions which detail airing the space out - causing cats to get sick in the apartment above because of the strong fumes) but the workers are very nice. Maintenance requests are handled quickly (if you get it in the AM - same day, PM - next day), as they have a full-time on-site staff.
- Beautifully kept grounds and scenery. I had a view of the river and the marsh. Good for walks.
- Safe, even at night. Great for families and women who live alone. Don't have to worry about being a victim of crime at any time, the most dangerous thing that might happen is you might fall into the Allegheny river :)
- Enjoyed the neighbors who I met.
- On-site gym and swimming pool. Safe receiving of packages at the front desk. Fenced in off leash dog area.
Other Stuff:
- The trash area looks like a high security prison. Fencing and cameras, with signage discussing the fines you may be subjected to for not abiding by their guidelines. When you put your trash into the compactor, makes an annoying screeching beeping alarm noise - so you don't do trash at odd hours to avoid waking up nearby residents. (I feel bad for people who live near the trash!)
- Repeatedly threatens residents with fines (remember getting some lovely notices) to abide by trash rules, but the dumpster was often too full. They would prefer for you to just keep trash sitting around your apartment instead of leaving it anywhere near the area. This problem got better as they scheduled more pick-ups by the conclusion of my stay.
- Seemingly high turnover in the office, which can sometimes result in inconsistencies.
- The train horn. This is something that most people get used to. But if you are a chronically light sleeper who doesn't see yourself getting used to a train going by every few hours at night, seek shelter elsewhere. I want to mention that I actually enjoyed watching the train go by, so this was a "neutral" to me, not a con. If you're super concerned, go for building 1 or building 2, anything but building 6 which is the closest to the tracks.
- Generally it is quiet and fine but there are some non-courteous people as you might encounter in any apartment area. This wasn't a huge issue and I'm thinking of one person in particular who let their dog bark all of the time, let their alarm go off for hours in the morning, etc. Thankfully the floor dulled the noise but it was still annoying, but this isn't the fault of The Docks and you might encounter these types of people anywhere. I'd say that people are generally more courteous at The Docks than other buildings I've lived in.
