I will start with saying that we (luckily) have not been here in years, but I do feel the timing is appropriate for this review. When my son was about nine or 10, we were told by a dentist here that he would need SIX teeth extracted in prep for future ortho work. They explained the process would require him being not fully unconscious, so he would have to be strapped to a board because he would be aware of what was happening during the procedure, but the medicine would make him forget when it was all over.
I took my son to my own dentist for a (free) 2nd opinion. He said the only person who should decide what teeth need extracting for ortho is the ortho. The only way he as a dentist would extract teeth is if there were serious tooth decay.
We ran to another dentist (Camelback Pediatric Dentistry - LOVE). He did NOT recommend removing any teeth. Furthermore, my son, now 14, is about a week away from getting his braces taken off. Guess how many teeth he had pulled - ZERO! His smile is beautiful.
How on earth could a responsible medical provider recommend such a terrifying procedure to a small child? I'm not saying they wanted to remove one tooth, or even two, but SIX!!! This seems to border on medical malpractice and every time I drive by that office I feel like going in and telling my story to the people sitting in the waiting room.
This is ON TOP of the fact that they try to convince you to run Xrays EVERY single time you go in....This is not done at our current office.
