| - Short story: Affordable, decent gym, nice people, helpful staff, not a rip off (I'll explain below.) parking is kind of crap, hot tub is unreliable, but all in all, it's my favorite gym in Calgary.
Longer story:
I've been going Fitness Plus for about 6 months now and really like it.
It's a very different gym than most other ones I've been to and that's a very good thing. The average age I would say is about 35. And the average body type is your average guy and girl's body type. It's not a gym filled with roid monkeys and d-bags which is a really nice change from World Health.
People are really friendly there, but if you don't want to talk to anyone, just put in your headphones and no one will bother you.
I have done a couple classes, but they're not really my thing (but that's the case at all gyms). I'm more into free-weights (bar bells, dumbbells, calisthenics etc) and I find the gym is good for that kind of stuff.
The reason I hate 90% of gyms out there, is they make you sign a contract which means if you cancel your membership early, you have to pay them sometimes a ton of cash for the privilege of leaving their stupid gym. This makes me so angry that I would rather bash myself in the head with a hammer than work out in a gym with that kind of membership.
Anyway, Fitness Plus doesn't do that which is great. I believe I paid $100 up front for a no contract membership. I want the flexibility to change gyms if the place starts to suck, or if I move or any other reason.
To sum up...
Pros:
Choice of no contract
Lots of classes
Friendly staff
Friendly clients
Hot tub, Wet and Dry Sauna, Showers and a small Pool
Child Care
Spin Classes
Locally owned and operated
Custom Fitness Plans
Fitness Tests
Very comfortable and non-competitive environment
Racquetball courts
On 8th Ave, so no traffic during rush hour
Lots of lockers
Cons:
Hot tub unreliable
Parking is kind of crap
Can be busy
Lacks some equipment like sand bags and very few kettle bells
Not great for cross fit training
No dedicated calisthenics area (although you can use the racquetball courts when they're empty which is totally fine with me)
