| - This is my second time going to the Massage Heights location in Dilworth. This review is for my second time. (My first time at Massage Heights was not a memorable experience, so that's why I did not include it in the scope of this review.) As context, I get massages at least once a month, and have an idea of what constitutes a good massage experience.
When I first checked into my appointment (I was there at least 5 minutes early), I was asked to sign some papers. The receptionist did not tell me where the bathroom was (I had to ask) or offer me any water before my session. After waiting for what I thought was awhile (I believe my masseuse did not get me until 5 minutes after my session had started), the masseuse (Mike) took me into my massage room and specifically asked me how I wanted my pressure. I asked him for medium pressure, and that I was there for purely relaxation purposes and didn't have any particular parts of my body that needed to be worked out.
During my massage, Mike started to work on the knots in my back and started applying intense pressure, such as digging his arms into my knots and applying intense pressure for 3 minutes at a time. This was most of my massage experience, and not what I considered relaxing. There were a couple times in my session where I either said "ow!" or asked for lighter pressure. To the former response, Mike said that he was getting out a knot, which I considered an insensitive response as it was evident that I was in pain. All in all, this seemed to be a deep tissue massage, not a medium pressure massage meant for relaxation.
For the rest of my body, Mike ended up doing a poor job, as he would slap lotion on me, perform a quick foot, leg, arm massage for 30 seconds, and then hastily throw the covers over me. His actions were spastic and did not generate a relaxing environment. After my painful massage, my session ended 5 minutes early (keeping in mind that we didn't start the massage until 10 minutes into my session).
At the end of my session, I relayed my concerns to the receptionist and told her that 1) I felt my massage was too short and 2) that my massage was not what I signed up for. To my first comment, she said that the 60 minutes includes 10 minutes of getting dressed and undressed. I told her that advertising this service as a 60 minute massages is incredibly misleading. To my second comment, she explained that Mike is known for "getting out knots". Ok, that's great and I did feel that my knots were gone, but a deep tissue massage is not what I signed up for and not what I requested in my session, especially after asking Mike multiple times to go lighter on the pressure. After all of this, the receptionist did not even try to make things right or even apologize.
To summarize, I ended up paying $80 for a 45 minute massage that left me in intense pain, and was ignored by the company when I complained. Needless to say I won't be back, but I hope this review provides Yelp users some context to the type of massage experiences one might experience at Massage Heights. As Charlotte has massage parlors that offer fantastic massage experiences for the same price, I encourage Yelp users to look elsewhere
