  • I like Bake Code. There are some unique tasting breads and pastries here and there are some things I absolutely love - but also some things that I think are just okay. As a whole, Bake Code gets 3 stars from me. The Markham is pretty similar to the North York one - except it seems like there was a lot less variety. Most of the drawers on the sides were empty. It is also definitely smaller and less cozy but I imagine they experience less traffic up at Woodbine and 16th anyway. Bake Code is fairly pricey - it's more like a place for an occasional treat rather than a regular Chinese bakery where you can buy your lunch for a week. Everything at this location at least, cost at least 4 dollars if not more. 6 for loaves of bread half the size of what you'd get at a grocery store. I only bought three things but overall I felt it was not really worth the price. Twice baked rare cheese tart - quite large for a tart. very rich and surprisingly soft and creamy inside. I definitely would not be able to finish something like this as it's very dense, but good. However, I know I could get a similar cheese tart at a regular Chinese bakery (Cakeview at Finch and Midland) for much less and also a more manageable portion. It is very Instagrammable if you're into that as they stamp their name on the top. About 5 dollars Matcha cream croissant - I've had this before and this will likely be the thing that I will go back to Bake Code for. It is so good and this is one of the things I love. The croissant itself is flaky yet still soft but the greatest thing about it is the matcha cream. So much matcha flavor and it feels like there's a hint of something floral. I'm not sure what. But the cream is so light and goes really well with the croissant. Not too sweet. The cream feels light but is also deceptively filling because of how rich the cream is too. (4.50) Salten molten egg croissant - I thought this was expensive (5.50) but I thought it was worth a try as the concept intrigued me. Before we ate it we microwaved it for about 20 seconds and the filling flowed right out when we cut it. Filling was quite oily and buttery - as it should be. Again, good but definitely heavy and not entirely worth the price in my opinion. You can get this in 3 steamed buns for much less at any dim sum place. There was more "salted egg" than sweetness in the filling - I would have preferred more sweetness but I do have a sweet tooth. Another one of my favorites from Bake Code is the cranberry cream cheese crown - cream cheese and dried cranberries in a soft bun. It is delicious and I love that you can save it for later as it's in three parts that you can just rip off. However - still pricey. I'm lucky that my mother is talented enough to make something similar. Overall, Bake Code is good but not amazing. The matcha cream croissant is. Not the regular one! The regular matcha croissant with nothing inside doesn't really taste like anything. I will come back when I'm craving one, but the price is what will keep me from coming here regularly. One last thing: I have so many points from Chatime that I really wanted to use here! Given that Bake Code and Chatime are owned by the same people I was hoping to be able to spend my points on things from Bake Code. Unfortunately, you can't - bread takes a lot more labor and cost to make so I guess it makes sense.
