| - A horribly overpriced, elitist and unfriendly little market in the Atwood neighborhood. They hire young girls to work the registers in an attempt to bring more people in (and probably so they can pay them as little as possible).
The worst thing? They discriminate against people who use food stamps. I was told they don't accept them the first time I went in there, forcing me to put everything back. When I called to complain, I was accused of lying about it, and asked 'what was the name of the person at the register'? How the hell should I know? Actually, they do accept them, but they have to 'call it in manually'. This takes a long time (and involves them taking your card, calling a system on the phone, having to sign a receipt in triplicate- yet more humiliating red tape), adding a long wait and the extra humiliation of everyone behind you having to wait longer and also know that you are on food stamps. That is super classist and degrading. I also know a man who was literally physically attacked by one of the owners and accused of using a stolen food stamp card (it was his wife's, and YES that is allowed). The police were called due to the altercation. I will NEVER patronize this store again- not when the awesome Willy Street Co Op is nearby, and not only do they accept food stamps, they offer a discount (the ACCESS Discount, ask at the front desk!) to low-income shoppers who use food stamps.
