| - DETAILED REVIEW - Skyline Helicopter Tour
Husband and I flew with Skyline on a Sunday night at 5 p.m. It had been windy and cold in Las Vegas but we were prepared because we wanted to fly with the doors off. We got a Groupon for a discount which included up to three people.
I've lived in Las Vegas for 33 years and my husband for 16 years, so it was great to see the city from a helicopter perspective. Both of us are thrill ride lovers, so it was not scary at all to either one of us even with the brief turbulence we experienced - it was smooth flying south to the Strip but a little bouncy near the Strip flying north back to the airport. AJ was our pilot.
Because we had read other reviews in the past, we were not blindsided by the following fees: $40 to fly with doors off, $5 required for camera in lanyard bag for those taking photos, $20 Skyline Photo and $25 airport/tax fee.
However, we were disappointed:
1) NIGHT/DARK $20 Photo: Photo is taken out on the runaway area and not in the hanger. It is very dark outside. On top of that, the helicopter is black. So other than us, what was the purpose of purchasing a $20 photo when basically nothing but us in seen. Felt Ripped Off - would have even preferred a photo in the well it hanger in front of another helicopter instead of the dark with nothing showing but us photo.
2) TIP PILOT: We are fine tipping the pilot but it would be nice to know this so we could budget for it. We left our wallets in the car - was told you could add to credit card charge.
3) NOTHING IN POCKET OR WRISTS: Both of us had sturdy coats with zippers but we were still told to remove ALL items and place them in a storage area under our seat in the helicopter. I ended up removing my FitBit, etc., that we had safe in zipped coat pocket. Literally don't bring anything.
4) LEFT SIDE IS PHOTOGRAPHY SIDE: My husband who had the camera was told to sit on the right side due to weight balance while I sat on the left side. Due to horseshoe flight pattern, I had the best views. However, husband who had camera was blocked from good views due to me sitting there. Had we known that the left side was better for views, I would have had camera rather than him.
5) HEADPHONES/MICROPHONE: Because we elected to have doors off in cold weather, we wore balaclavas to cover our faces. However, we could not hear anything at all the pilot was saying because our ears were covered. Pilot was pointing out landmarks and interacting with us, but we just could not hear him. Anyone with a hat that covers their ears will be disappointed - headphone and microphone is a must for communications.
No ID is checked, even for charging of credit card.
There is merchandise in the store for sale: t-shirts and dri-fit shirts, baseball hats, backpack combo and native american statues. There is a vending machine with candy for $1.00. Lockers are onsite but I didn't see any locks. A separate Mens and Womens Restroom is available for guests. The lobby area has several couches and cocktail tables with chairs along with Television and Magazines.
An onsite restaurant is located at the North Las Vegas Airport called Sunshine and Tailwinds inside the main terminal.
You will take a golf cart from the hanger out to the take off/landing area. Escort will verbally give you instructions about the ride.
We arrived 45 minutes prior to our scheduled 5 p.m. flight. With delays etc., we were in the golf cart by 5:20 p.m.
I was disappointed with the above items, as our photos were mediocre at best. Our video actually turned out better. Would like to do a Strip Night helicopter ride again with the information we know now. Recommend company communicate even little things to customers to enhance experience.
