| - Surprise Stadium, the spring home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals, is a very nice facility located very far away from the Phoenix-Scottsdale-Tempe nexus. Choosing exurb locations has been popular with teams in recent years, which is understandable as moving to nascent communities allows the teams to take large swaths of land and (I assume) solicit large concessions from local governments.
Putting aside the long drive involved with reaching Surprise, and the weird Steppford feeling the town evokes (seriously, minus the cacti Surprise could be any exurb town in any state in America. It's scary), this is a pleasant facility that offers a comfortable spring training experience.
To start off with, the parking is free. This is unique in the cactus league and a small but nice gesture to the fans. In addition, Surprise offers golf cart parking. And while I really question the environmental/societal/general merits of golf courses in the desert I find golf cart parking amusing as hell.
Suprise Stadium was built in 2002 and is one of the few HOK-designed stadiums I actually like. The grass viewing area is plentiful, well-angled for viewing and supremely comfortable-- making it my favorite lawn seating in the Cactus League. The stands, like all stadiums in the CL, afford patrons a good view no matter where they sit. Surprise has a small second deck next to the pressbox that affords a nice overhead angle.
Ushers and other staff at Suprise aren't overly friendly, but they are reasonable and efficient and decidedly preferable to the folks on power trips who work at Peoria. The concessions are overpriced, but no more so than any other ST stadium. The BBQ sammie is pretty good, but I've got to express my disappointment in the discontinuation of the deep fried twinkies and oreos. This is a travesty.
Like all other ST facilities, Suprise is a hotbed of former players, front office staff, former coaches and other team related folks intermixed with the crowd. What makes this particularly cool at Suprise is the possibility of having Nolan Ryan sitting directly in front of you, as he was in front of us earlier this week.
In sum, Surprise is a very nice stadium, and probably one of HOK's overall best efforts. I just wish it wasn't so damned far away.
