  • I can't believe it took us so long to get back to Alma after the Elite event because everything at their restaurant is amazing. However, we finally got there during restaurant week so we were limited to their special menu. No problemo! The RW 4-course menu selections were delicious and HUGE portions--not "tasting" menu sized. We had a table of 8, and everybody was pleased with, well, pretty much everything!!! Appetizer: 1/2 of us had the Empanadas (that night they were pork and other goodies wrapped up in a delicious little pocket), and the other 1/2 had the Plátanos maduros (sweet, fried plantains). The Empanada-eaters wolfed down their food--picking up every stray piece of meat or corn and scraping their plates clean. Of course, we plantain eaters were just as happy. In fact, every since that meal, I cannot get plantains out of my head--I want more so badly! Oh and that black bean puree on the side. So good! Soup/Salad: None of us went for the soup. It's description reminded me of gazpacho. Anyway, we were all happy with our salads, Ensalata de Quinoa. If you don't like quinoa, go have some at Alma. It will change your mind. Delicious! The presentation was really cute too, wrapping in a super-thin slice of cucumber. Entree: We all went our separate ways on the entree, and everything was great. I shared a scallop dish and a chicken dish (Pollo Adobo) with my daughter. The scallops were perfectly cooked, topped with another delicious sauce, and accompanied by a nice rice mix and squash. The chicken was not spicy but full of delicious spices...a well-executed mole. It was served over a different but equally yummy rice mix with black beans. Both were even great the next day! Others in our party had the pork and the beef brisket (Vaca frita). My husband said the beef brisket was top notch. The pork eaters cleaned their plates so I'm assuming it was good since we were all getting full after so much food. One person in our party went vegetarian and loved it. Entree bottom line: They've got vegetarian and vegan choices, they do seafood well, and they cook all the meats to perfection! But wait, there's more?! Dessert: Flan--so good here! I've now had it twice, and if I could go anywhere in the city for flan, it would be here. Also, everyone who had the chocolate cake loved it and the cinnamon ice cream on the side. A perfect pairing. I felt like I made a mistake by ordering the Brazilian pudding--I wanted to try something new. It was the strangest combination of bananas, avocado, and chocolate. It tasted like salty banana baby food to me. I wished for more flan! However, others in our party thought it was a nice way to end the meal. Drinks: The drinks here are ridiculous good. All cocktails are clearly handmade with love. We had the "special" ginger margaritas. My friend had a "special" mojito of some sort for her first round, which was good, but she switched immediately to our margaritas after a single sip. Another friend had this espresso martini (Cocktail de Cafe). If I wasn't so in love my margarita, I would have had a few of those too! The decor is comfortable and slightly upscale at the same time. Good for date night or just a nice dinner out. We can't wait to get back so we can try everything else on the regular menu!
